The first step to becoming an appraiser is to complete an accredited appraisal education program. Appraisers must then pass a rigorous exam administered by the state in which they wish to practice. Once licensed, appraisers must maintain their skills and knowledge by completing continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Appraisers must have strong communication and people skills. They must be able to clearly explain their findings to clients, lenders, attorneys, and other interested parties. They must also be able to work independently and meet deadlines.
