One of the biggest challenges that disabled people face is accessing education. According to a report by the National Council on Disability, only about 20 percent of disabled people ages 18-24 were enrolled in college in 2016. This is significantly lower than the enrollment rate for non-disabled people in the same age group (65 percent).
There are a number of reasons why disabled people have difficulty accessing education. One is that many educational institutions are not designed to accommodate people with disabilities. For example, many buildings do not have ramps or elevators, making it difficult for people who use wheelchairs to get around. Another obstacle is that many educational materials (such as textbooks) are not available in accessible formats, such as Braille or large print. This makes it difficult for people with visual impairments to access the same information as their non-disabled peers.
The good news is that there are a number of organizations working to improve educational opportunities for disabled people. For example, the National Federation of the Blind offers a variety of programs and resources to help blind students succeed in school. with the help of our organization disabled people will have greater access to education and other opportunities.
