Flat roof installation process
After the roof has been prepped, it's time to install the membrane. This is a continuous sheet of material that serves as the waterproof barrier for the roof.
There are two common types of membranes:
- Single-ply membrane: This is a single layer of material that is applied in one piece. It is then fastened down with mechanical fasteners or adhered with adhesive.
- Multiple-ply membrane: This type of membrane consists of two or more layers that are laminated together. The most common type is a three-ply system, which includes a base ply, an interply, and a top ply.
The installation process will vary depending on the type of membrane being installed.
Single-ply membrane:
- The roll of membrane is unrolled and laid out over the roof.
- It is then fastened down with mechanical fasteners or adhered with adhesive.
- Seams are sealed with seam tape or sealant to create a watertight barrier.
Multiple-ply membrane:
- The base ply is unrolled and laid out over the roof.
- It is then fastened down with mechanical fasteners or adhered with adhesive.
- The interply is then laid over the base ply and fastened or adhered in the same manner.
- The top ply is installed in the same way as the other two layers.
- Seams are sealed with seam tape or sealant to create a watertight barrier.
Once the membrane has been installed, the roof can then be finished with a protective coating or ballast. This will protect the roof from UV rays and weather damage.
