A designer in construction is responsible for the look of a finished project. They work with clients to come up with ideas, make sketches and blueprints, and help oversee the construction to make sure it stays on track with the original vision. Designers typically have a degree in architecture or interior design, although there are many who specialize in other areas such as landscape design. No matter their focus, all designers need to be able to think outside the box and be creative problem-solvers, since so much of their job is figuring out how to turn someone's vision into reality. They also need to be able to communicate well, since they often work directly with clients and contractors.

A designer typically does the following in construction: 1. Reviews project requirements and develops design criteria 2. Prepares drawings or sketches of proposed designs 3. Coordinates work with other professionals, such as engineers and contractors 4. Inspects construction work for compliance with approved plans and specifications 5. May prepare cost estimates for construction projects
