You can dethatch a lawn with a rake, but it's much easier with a dethatcher. A dethatcher looks like a small lawn mower, but has vertical blades that come up out of the ground and cut the thatch (thick layer of dead grass) off the surface of the lawn. If you have only a small area to dethatch, you can use a manual rake. For bigger areas, you'll need to rent or buy a power-dethatcher.
