You can dethatch a lawn with a rake, but it's much easier with a dethatcher. A dethatcher looks like a small lawn mower, but has vertical blades that come up out of the ground and cut the thatch (thick layer of dead grass) off the surface of the lawn. If you have only a small area to dethatch, you can use a manual rake. For bigger areas, you'll need to rent or buy a power-dethatcher. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully so you don't damage your lawn. Also, be sure to wear safety goggles and gloves when using any power tool.
The best way to dethatch a yard is to use a rake. You can also use a lawn mower or a garden tractor with an appropriate attachment. Be careful not to scalp the lawn while dethatching.
