  • It depends on the type of stone, the construction methods, and the environment. Generally, stone walls can last for centuries with proper maintenance. The key to a long-lasting stone wall is using durable stones that are well-matched in size and shape. The mortar should be strong and applied in a consistent manner. And finally, the wall should be situated in a dry, frost-free location.

It depends on the type of stone, the climate, and how it's built. Generally, though, stone retaining walls last a long time if they're built well. In general, sandstone and limestone can last hundreds of years when used for retaining walls, while granite can last thousands of years. If a retaining wall is built in an area with extreme weather conditions (freezing/thawing cycles or high rainfall), it may only last for 10-20 years. And if a retaining wall isn't properly backfilled or if water is allowed to seep through the stones, it will deteriorate much more quickly.
